The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent psychological disorders in childhood. The goal is to describe the status quo in etiology regarding genetic, neurobiological and neuropsychological factors. Subsequently, currently established therapies in the treatment of ADHD as well as their effectiveness are presented. Modern methods of non-invasive brain imaging (MRI, fMRI) provide the opportunity to specify anatomical and functional changes in ADHD. Investigations with the help of these techniques are in the centre of this overview of etiology and treatment in ADHD. Finally, possible future directions in research of ADHD will be described.
