To solve the fuzzy phenomenon of fusion images, an adaptive image fusion algorithm based on the non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) is proposed. The good properties of the contourlet transform and the non-subsampled contourlet transform are discussed. After the original images are decomposed by the NSCT, the low-frequency images are fused by the low-frequency changing rate and uniformity. When the changing rate difference between the low-frequency images is lower than the threshold value, the changing rate is selected to making decision; otherwise the uniformity is used to make decision. The high-frequency coefficients are merged by the 'absolute maximum choosing' scheme. After the image is fused, the entropy, relative error and average gradient are used to evaluate the fusion performance. The results show the adaptive fusion algorithm based on the non-subsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) obtains better fusion performance.
