An innovative single-camera two-dimensional digital image correlation (DIC) technique based on camera self-calibration is developed for use in the field where specialized fixed setups are not practical. The technique only requires attaching a planar calibration cover to the specimen surface and capturing images of the specimen from different orientations before and after deformation. A camera calibration procedure allows the camera to be freely repositioned without fixed mounts or known configurations, after which displacements are calculated with DIC. Computer simulated, random speckle images are used to test the proposed technique and good results are reported. Compared with the classical techniques which require precise fixed setups, the proposed technique is easier to use and more flexible, advancing the DIC beyond the laboratory into the real world.
