摘要

The aim of the paper is a well-founded, both comprehensive and precise ethical assessment of neuroenhancement. To this end, it examines different aspects such as the efficacy and side effects of neuroenhancers, the question of the goal of self-improvement, of human nature and naturalness, the principle of autonomy, the social impact and the question of the good human life. It discusses central arguments of the ethical debate and weighs the pros and cons of neuroenhancement. The result is: Some of the oft-repeated arguments against neuroenhancement are quite weak, the principle of individual autonomy has to play a central role and serious objections have to be raised in regard to the social impact of neuroenhancement and to the idea of the good life of the users. Despite these objections there cannot be found strong moral argument against neuroenhancement that would have the strength to justify a prohibition of it. Nonetheless, there are good reasons to advise against neuroenhancement.
