A crystallized mesoporous Zr-Nb mixed oxide, Zr6Nb2O17, with wormhole-like pore structure was prepared by a two-step calcination procedure. The first-step calcination at 350 degreesC removed the block copolymer template from the mixed metal oxide with amorphous wall structure. The BET surface area and pore size of this amorphous precursor were 178 m(2) g(-1) and 3.3 nm, respectively. The second-step calcination at 720 degreesC crystallized the amorphous walls to Zr6Nb2O17 while maintaining the mesopore structure in small single-crystal domains (similar to100nm). The crystallized mesoporous Zr6Nb2O17 had a BET surface area of 58 m(2)g(-1) and pore size of 9.3 nm. This mesoporous Zr6Nb2O17 material exhibits high mechanical and hydrothermal stability.
