It was found that 2-amino-1,2-diphenylethanol forms organogels with a wide variety of acidic compounds in a large number of organic liquids, in which short contacts such as CH-pi hydrogen bonds play a key role in gel formation. This new kind of acid-base, two-component organogelator has potential application as a fluorescence switch and in the preparation of organic nanotubes, silver nanofibers, and ultrathin silver nanoparticles of less than 3 nm, which could be used as catalysts for the reduction of nitroaniline.
