A new Schiff base, N,N'-(bis(pyridin-2-yl)formylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine (bpfd) is prepared and used to synthesize a novel end-to-end thiocyanato bridged infinite 1D polymeric heptacoordinated cadmium(II) chain [Cd(bpfd)(mu(1.3)-NCS)(NCS)](n) (1) which forms a 3D supramolecule through weak C-H center dot center dot center dot S hydrogen bonding and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interaction.
