  Since the 1990s, s uburbanization of industry and residential space has become an important trend in Chinese large cities.With the restructuring of the urban space, the urban fringe has attracted a large number of floating population and many residents from inner city.In this way, the socio-spatial structure of the urban fringe has changed rapidly.Tongde community, which was a village in the Guangzhou suburbs before 1978, became a suburban village and urban village of the urban fringe in the 1990s, and finally transformed to an urban community.Its management system,social structure, economic structure and land use structure have taken a great change, which attributes to accelerating urbanization process, social and economic development, the state macro-control policy and urban planning, land market and location.These factors lead to the development dilemma of Tongde community, specifically including the structural imbalance of land use and the restricted economic development, traffic chaos and a serious shortage of facilities, the spatial concentration of low-income group and the marginalized community, etc..The research focuses on the evolution characteristics, formation mechanism and development dilemma of Tongde community, and attempts to provide the development and construction strategy of the urban-rural fringe community.
