Macroporous crosslinked poly(p-vinylbenzylphenylether) resin, which can be abbreviated to phenylether resin, was synthesized from chloromethylated polystyrene. The adsorption isotherms of phenol onto phenylether resin from hexane and aqueous solution were measured, and the adsorption enthalpies we're calculated. In addition, adsorption properties of phenol onto poly(p-vinylbenzylmethylether), phenylether resin, poly(p-vinylbenzyl-p-nitrophenylether), and poly(p-vinylbenzyl-p-methylphenylether) from hexane as well as those of phenol, 2,3,5-trimethylphenol, and p-nitrotoluene onto chloromethylated polystyrene and phenylether resin from aqueous solution were investigated. The results indicated that phenylether resin adsorbed phenol from hexane by hydrogen bonding, while it adsorbed phenol from aqueous solution through the cooperation of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction.
