摘要

Family businesses are characterized by a high extent of continuity with regard to leadership as well as ownership. A business succession disrupts this continuity causing extensive challenges for the affected family business. Hence, a variety of research studies have already been conducted, however, only in rare cases an empirical approach has been applied. This article explores business succession using an unique sample - in terms of size and representativeness - of realized cases. In particular, the incumbent, the successor as well as the process of family-internal and family-external business successions are being contrasted and distinct differences could be revealed.
