The multiple ways in which N-2 can be coordinated to FeMo-co, the Fe7MoS9C cluster at the active site of the enzyme nitrogenase, are catalogued and interpreted, in the context of other N-2-activating metal complexes. N-2 bound to FeMo-co is located in a unique gallery of surrounding hydrogen atoms, proposed to be a key factor in the conversion to NH3.
