A PROPOSAL FOR CATHODE RAY TUBES WASTE RECYCLING

The cathode ray tubes (CRTs) present a disposal problem because of their growing magnitude in municipal solid waste (MSW) and their role as a major source of lead in MSW. In the present study an innovative method for waste CRTs recycling is presented. The main objectives of the study were: (1) to obtain a composite, which can be used as building material, by mixing small pieces of waste CRTs glass with white cement, and (2) to examine the lead leachabillity from the composite under various pH conditions. The results showed that the lead leachability from the composite is strongly influenced by the pH conditions. The lower leachability (0.163-0.179 mg/kg) was registered in the slightly acidic conditions (5.5 < pH < 6.5). The leachability increased with pH value, to 0.527 mg/kg at pH = 12. In acidic medium the leachability was considerably higher reaching 2.62 mg/kg at pH = 1, respectively 431.9 mg/kg at pH approximate to 0. The data of the present study proved that the obtained composite can be a good alternative for CRTs recycling and it can be safely used as building material if the environmental pH is slightly acidic (5.5-6.5) and neutral.
