ACTIVE VIDEOGAMES AND YOUNG PEOPLE'S HEALTH: A RESEARCH REVIEW

This paper reviews the current research addressing active videogames and young people's health. These videogames represent a modern alternative for maintaining an active lifestyle and can be used as new rehabilitation methods. However, they may also negatively influence young people's health, giving rise to different kinds of injuries, mainly in inactive youngsters with limited physical fitness. This review observes a necessity for sociological and epidemiological studies to gather information about the real impact this growing phenomenon may have on young population's physical activity levels and injury prevalence. A critical assessment and use of active videogames is necessary to enhance positive influence of these modern technologies on young people's health, leisure and wellbeing.
