A novel ship detection method based on Shannon entropy in Chinese Gaofen-3 fully polarimetric SAR images

Polarimetric synthetic aperture radarPolSARdata consists of rich polarimetric information about the scattering properties of the ground objects, having been widely used in maritime monitoring and objects detection. China has launched its first C-band SAR satellite, Gaofen-3, which possesses multi-polarimetric and high-resolution imaging capability. To explore the potential of ship detection using the Gaofen-3 fully polarimetric data, a novel ship detection method using the Shannon entropy is proposed in this paper, which is applied to the quad-polarimetric SAR images. The polarimetric covariance difference matrix (PCDM) is generated to improve the image local contrast at the pre-procession procedure. Then the Shannon entropy features of the SAR images are extracted. Afterwards, the reaction differences between the ships and sea clutters are analyzed, to distinguish the ship targets from the sea clutters. The Gaofen-3 Quad Polarimetric Stripmap I mode (QPS-I) SAR images are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The HV and SPAN method are used for comparison. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is able to effectively enhance the ship-sea contrast, and obtain higher detection accuracy with lower false alarm rates.
