One of the most common problems of ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is the imbalance of heat extracted from ground during space heating and heat emitted into the earth during space cooling. A new way is brought forward to solve this problem. The heat emitted into the earth can be reduced by adding a heat pump water heater to the GSHP and thus the hybrid GSHP can provide hot water as well as space cooling/heating. Economic analysis shows that the expense of GSHP water heater is 1.507 x 10(5) RMB/year while serving a restaurant which needs 3.382 x 10(9) kJ for water heating. Several such hybrid GSHP systems are introduced. Analysis of heat balance of GSHP for restaurants in five typical climatic areas is presented as well. The imbalance in the area which is hot in summer and warm in winter can be reduced by 25.6%. The results of experiment show the performance of GSHP water heater. EER of heat pump varies from 2.30 to 4.05 while the flux of hot water changes from 0.03 kg/s to 0.12 kg/s. The conclusion indicates that hybrid GSHP system can not only provide cheap hot water besides space cooling/heating but also account for a method to mitigate or even solve the imbalance of heat extract or emitted into the ground of usual GSHP system.
