Nanoscale duplex oxide growth during early stages of oxidation of Cu-Ni(100)

A combination of real-time in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and ex situ transmission electron microscopy is utilized to investigate the early stages of oxidation of Cu-Ni(100). Sequential formation of NiO and Cu(2)O oxides was observed by increasing oxygen partial pressure, and the Cu(2)O phase was identified to form preferentially on top of NiO nanoislands. The origin of this unexpected phenomenon is attributed to localized enrichment of Cu atoms accompanied with NiO growth, which thermodynamically drives the nanoscale Cu(2)O/NiO duplex oxide growth.
