Regioselective ring opening of aryl epoxides with chelated amino acid ester enolates gives rise to beta-hydroxymethyl phenylalanine derivatives. This methodology allows straightforward access to a wide range of modified beta-phenylalanine derivatives, which can be subjected to further transformations.
