A Dynamic Unequal Energy Efficient Clustering in Wireless Sensor Network

In Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), much attention has been devoted to the energy aware routing and clustering to make the load balanced and the network lifetime longer. The limited energy in battery based sensing as well as the energy hot spot problem because of the unbalanced load in different locations always exist in clustering. Recent studies show that from energy harvest perspective, the network lifetime will be much longer under certain energy constraints. In this paper, we propose an energy aware hierarchical clustering protocol with variable cluster size under the circumstance of harvesting ambient energy on each node. Different from the traditional cluster-based scheme in WSN, we uniquely combine multi-factors in cluster number and size optimization on energy consumption. As to the Cluster Head (CH) selection which is independent, the residual energy and distance to others are main factors for nodes to compete for CH. The reformed hierarchical clustering algorithm and the interruption mechanism are adopted in clustering and CH selection. Theoretically, clustering and CH selection should happen all the time for the variant residual energy, however, the interruption mechanism to activate the reform of clustering and cluster head re-selection makes the calculation complexity lower. Performance results show that the newly designed clustering method makes the network lifetime longer in comparison with some traditional cluster based routing protocols like LEACH.
