When female dogs with suspected abnormalities of the oestrous cycle are presented in practice, a thorough gynaecological examination should be performed. Clinical signs of cycle abnormalities can include unexpected or unusual vaginal discharge, absence of an expected oestrus, or infertility. An early diagnosis can have significant impact on the health and fertility of the bitch as well as having economic effects. Detailed knowledge about regular sexual function and possible abnormalities is necessary. In addition, the actual cycle stage and the hormonal interactions have to be considered to be able to choose an effective therapy with few side-effects and a good prognosis. This article aims to provide an overview of the most common irregularities of the bitch's sexual cycle and discusses treatment options.
