A novel microstrip dipole antenna with wideband and end-fire properties

A novel microstripdip ole antenna with wideband and end-fire properties is presented. It employs a teardrop dipole and an open sleeve structure for wide impedance bandwidth, and four printed directors for the end-fire radiation pattern and high end-fire gains. The antenna has been optimized in an automated design, making use of the Genetic Algorithm (GA) with full-wave EM simulation and cluster parallel computation. The resulting antenna exhibits encouraging properties, i.e., its S (11) < -10 dB impedance bandwidth surpasses 2.56:1 (from 1.32 GHz to 3.39 GHz), while has a maximum return loss -13.2 dB, maintains the end-fire radiation pattern and obtains end-fire gains from 5.2 dBi to 9.3 dBi over a frequency band from 1.5 GHz to 3.0 GHz. An antenna prototype has been fabricated and tested. Good agreement is obtained between numerical calculated and measured results.
