摘要

A new mechanism on the selection of the wavelength of ripples in vertically vibrated thicker granular layer is proposed. Inhomogeneous compaction of the layer induced by its collision with the container bottom leads to repeated local solid-fluid transitions and the upward refraction of the density wave propagation, which deforms the layer surface at periodic positions. This process determines the wavelength of the parametrically excited surface waves, whose dispersion relation depends on the part of the layer that is effectively in fluid phase.
