A simple method for fabricating concave lenses for the terahertz regime

A simple method was developed for fabricating concave lenses for the terahertz regime from sheets of polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate. Given a desired focal length, the desired radii of curvature are imprinted into a polymer sheet using a heated metal bearing ball. Unlike some materials used for terahertz applications, such as Teflon and silicon, these polymers are transparent at visible wavelengths, simplifying tasks such as visual alignment. The lens surface quality, as well as the terahertz transmission properties of the polymers used, is discussed.
