Differentiation of crystalline and amorphous phases in photothermorefractive glass by secondary ion mass spectrometry

Photothermorefractive glass (PTRG) is a complex material combining properties of amorphous and crystalline components in the same matrix. PTRG is one of the leading photosensitive materials in holographic gratings production and is a new optical material for lasers. Even though PTRG application is quite mature, the precise mechanism for induced photosensitivity is still under intense investigation. This paper presents secondary ion mass spectrometry investigation in this question by identifying and optimizing detection of secondary ion clusters that provide not only elemental but also structural information on the composition of the PTRG. The crystalline phase of NaF is presumably responsible for the photosensitivity of PTRG and was differentiated from Na and F bound in amorphous matrix by detection of (NaF)Na+, Cs(NaF)(2)(+), and (NaF)(2)Na+ secondary ion clusters. Choices of secondary clusters and their sensitivity to NaF crystallinity are discussed. The depth profiles of crystalline NaF on PTRG samples of varying degree of crystallization as well as on a holographic grating are presented.
