Luminescent and scintillation properties of Sc3+ and La3+ doped Y2SiO5 powders and single crystalline films

The paper is dedicated to the investigation of the luminescence of Sc3+ and La3+ isoelectronic impurities in Y2SiO5(YSO) single crystalline films (SCF), grown by the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) method, and in the powder analogs of these compounds prepared using the ceramic technology. The Sc3+ and La3+ dopants replacing the Y3+ cations in Y1 and Y2 positions of YSO host introduce the strong complex emission bands in the UV range peaked at 330 and 345 nm, respectively. The Sc3+ and La3+ dopant in YSO matrix yields also the strong TSL peaks at 400 and 405 K related to the ScY and ScLa centers formation, respectively. The luminescence and scintillation properties of YSO SCFs doped with Sc3+ and La3+ ions and co-doped with Ce3+ ions on the trace impurity level have been also studied in our work. We have found that the light yield (LY) of these YSO:Sc and YSO:La SCFs can reach 50-65% of LY in reference YSO: Ce SCF due to strong quenching influence of Pb2+ ions. Finally, the potential of Sc3+ and La3+ doped SCF of orthosilicates for creation of heavy scintillation screens, emitting in the UV range, is discussed.
