Nanostructured TiO2 Coated Stainless Steel for Corrosion Protection

Nanostructured TiO2 has been applied as a protective coating against corrosion of the 304 stainless steel (304 SS) in strong acidic environment (i.e., 2 M HCI). The sol gel derived TiO2 films on the metal surface were prepared by dip-coating and thermal spray methods. Meanwhile, the surface morphology was examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The cross-section SEM showed that the film thickness is around 250 nm. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis was performed in order to investigate the particle size distribution of titania nanoparticles in the sol. The predominant nanoparticles size is around 1.5 nm. Corrosion inhibition efficiency (%/E) was determined using weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods. Moreover, the effect of heat on the corrosion rate was studied and the thermodynamic activation parameters (Delta H-#, Delta S-#, Delta G(#)) were calculated at different experimental conditions.
