Phase-Field Simulation of Interdiffusion and Microstructure of Cu-Ni Diffusion Couples

The atomic migration and microstructure evolution of interdiffusion in Cu-Ni diffusion couples were investigated using the phase-field simulation. The atoms diffusion direction is dominated by the concentration gradient in the alpha(1)(Cu-rich)/alpha(1) + alpha(2)(Ni-rich) or alpha(2)/alpha(1) + alpha(2) diffusion couples, the Ni atoms migrate from the high concentration to the low concentration regions and the interface moves to the two-phase side. The chemical potential gradient dominates the atoms diffusion direction in the alpha(1) + alpha(2)/alpha(1) + alpha(2) diffusion couple, and the Ni atoms migrate from the low concentration to the high concentration regions. The larger the concentration difference between the diffusion couples, the intenser the interdiffusion and interface movement. Thus, the atoms diffusion direction and the interface microstructure depend on the concentration difference, chemical potential gradient and the initial morphology of the couples.
