A Cryptographic Processor for Secured Satellite Networks

Satellite networks are increasingly becoming strategic assets and are pivotal,for the development, security, and national defense. Consequently, the security of these satellite networks is cardinal. This paper presents a method of secured satellite data transfer using cryptographic techniques and develop a cryptographic processor for the onboard and ground applications. Secured satellite data encryption and decryption is carried out by a dedicated unit to encryption and decryption-board as well as at the ground stations. The encryption and decryption of the data has been carried out using hardware and software implementation of Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and is incorporated into an FPGA to achieve high throughput. MATLAB simulations have been carried out to validate the implementation in various modes of operation including the ECB. Embedded implementation using a TI DSP processor is also presented for applications in test beds for verification and validation activities to be incorporated in 3rd generation miniaturized On-Board Computers (OBC).
