A mild and efficient method for the synthesis of 3-arylnaphtho[2,3-f]quinoline-1,2-dicarboxylate derivatives via Povarov reaction of aromatic aldehyde, anthracen-2-amine, and but-2-ynedioate is described using Yb(OTf)(3) as catalyst. The features of this procedure are mild reaction conditions, good yields, and operational simplicity.
