The knowledge of the liquid flow within packed bed will produce a theory foundation for mathematical simulation, technological operation and process control of blast furnace, and therefore will give guidance for the development of the ironmaking process. Some basic features of liquid flow in blast furnace were summarized as liquid flowing as un-wetting liquid droplets, all volumetric forces of liquid droplets being balanced with bed resistance force, and mass exchange flux existing perpendicularly to liquid flow velocity and suitable mathematical descriptions were given respectively to them. A mathematical model was established to predict the distribution of the liquid mass transport fluxes and the flowing liquid range inside packed bed. In parallel with the model, appropriate numerical solution method for it was produced and the scale of the numerical grid used may not be reduced to the particle level. The predicted results of this model accord well with the observed data in literatures. This model can also give the non-steady results and is an alternative theory for simulation of blast furnace.
