A novel structure "oversized carbon nanohorns"

The oversized carbon nanohorns (oversized CNHs) were firstly synthesized by the two-step arc discharge method in positive pressure 0.2 MPa using the first-step CNHs as nucleation center in their formation mechanism. In their structures, the first-step CNHs with "dahlia-like" structure are encapsulated by the outer-CNH-layer of the "bud-like" CNH aggregates. The mean size of the oversized CNHs is similar to 215.8 nm which is almost three times larger than that of the conventional CNHs. The surface area (SSA) of the outer-CNH-layer of oversized CNHs with large interstitial nanopores is calculated to be 270 m(2)/g which is larger than the first-step CNHs (139 m(2)/g). When the first-step CNHs used as the nucleation center of the oversized CNHs are subject to heat treatment, the structures of the oversized CNHs hosting the CNHs which have nanowindows are obtained. Due to the large interstitial nanopores in the outer-CNH-layer and the large size of the oversized CNHs, they should become promising drug delivery carriers.
