摘要

This paper proposes a holistic approach to decipher the operation of complex planetary gearsets used in an automatic transmission system. It presents various theoretical, computer-aided simulation, and experimental methods. Theoretical solutions use the rolling contact equations mid the superposition principle. Compuer-aided simulations utilize the SolidWorks motion analysis tool. Furthermore, the process of design, manufacture, and operation of two bands-on teaching tools dedicated to demonstrating the operation of an automatic transmission system is explained One of the manufactured prototypes operates electro-pneumatically and uses a programmable logic controller (PLC) for shifting gears It is also capable of providing an estimation for the power loss in the transmission system The other prototype is used for practicing assembly and disassembly of the the gear train and exploring relations of its various components Manufacture of these mechanical simulators is among the major contributions of this project. Finally several educational video clips have been prepared to demonstrate the operation of the prototypes, and the corresponding web-site links are provided The collection of these hardware and software tools offers several techniques for deciphering the operation of Planetary gear train systems for students. By using this holistic approach. students obtain it comprehensive and deep understanding of the design and operation of planetary gear trains and automatic transmission systems.
