A crystal structure of a new layered [Nb4OI8][Mo6I14](2 infinity) polymer containing a previously unknown niobium cluster {Nb-4(mu(4)-O)I-8}(2+) with a mu(4) oxygen atom is determined. The compound crystallizes in the P (1) over bar triclinic space group with unit cell parameters a = 10.1842(6) angstrom, b = 10.1880(6) angstrom, c = 11.5700(6) angstrom, alpha = 78.058(2)degrees, beta = 77.944(2)degrees, gamma = 80.738(2)degrees, V = 1139.85(11) angstrom(3), Z = 1, R-f = 0.0414. The electronic structure of the [{Nb-4(mu(4)-O)I-8}I-4](2-) cluster complex is calculated.
