An unprecedented method for the synthesis of highly functionalized indanes from arynes and alpha,gamma-diketo esters is described. Importantly, mild and nearly pH-neutral conditions ensure excellent functional group tolerance. Theoretical studies indicated that the reaction proceeds through a benzocyclobutane intermediate.
