Drug Utilization Trends among Hypertensive Patients in Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital Larkana, Sindh

This study aimed to evaluate drug utilization trends among hypertensive patients in a tertiary care hospital at Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan. The pattern of this study was prospective drug utilization. 256 prescriptions were analyzed to identify the prescribing pattern in hypertensive patients. A total of 1735 drugs were prescribed with the mean average of 6.77 per patient. 588 (33.89%) were antihypertensives, 211 (12.16%) were NSAIDs, 163 (9.39%) anticholinergics, 102 (5.87%) benzodiazepines, 97 (5.60%) anti-diabetic drugs, 55 (3.17 %) anti-psychotics and miscellaneous category included 519 (29.91%) drugs. Among antihypertensives, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) were 172 (29.25%), ACE inhibitors were 138 (23.46%). Ca channel blockers were 92 (15.64%), beta-blockers were 58 (9.86%), and fixed dose combination was 128 (21.76%). Mostly prescribed antihypertensives were ARBs and ACE inhibitors. Most of the patients were endorsed rational prescribing, but still more improvements are required. More elaborated studies emphasized on rational for selection of drugs founded on demographic data, socioeconomic factors and other related conditions would give clear perception to prescribing trends among hypertensive patients in Pakistan.
