摘要

During the study of diatom assemblages inhabiting the coastal zone of San Francisco Bay and the nearby Pacific Ocean a number of species which were difficult to accommodate in any established taxa have been investigated. In previous publications nine species of Navicula and Fogedia krammeri have been described as new. In this paper, results are presented from light and electron microscopic studies on further specimens from these localities that belong to the genus Nitzschia. Descriptions based on light and scanning electron microscopy are presented of four new species: Nitzschia abelmanniae sp. nov., Nitzschia simsiae sp. nov., Nitzschia sancti-francisci sp.nov. and Nitzschia trobajoae sp. nov. Two of these species have previously been illustrated and are more widely distributed than the remaining two, which seem to be endemic to the San Francisco Bay region.
