A MINIATURIZED MACHINE FOR MICRO-SHEET FORMING

A new miniaturized machine was developed for micro-forming of thin sheets. A piezoelectric actuator was used to give the stroke and a load cell to support the die. This way, the punch position and speed were precisely controlled and the forming forces were measured during processing. In order to show the capabilities of the micro-forming machine, a deep-drawing operation was performed on a 20 mm thick, pure aluminium sheet. Tensile tests were carried out to evaluate the sheet properties; scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning surface topography were used to analyse the quality of the forming operation. Forming forces were acquired at different values of drawing speed and a very high reliability was observed.
