The Identification of Cementite for Differentiating Between the Various Types of Bainite in Modern Low-Alloyed Multi-Phase Steels

Bainitic microstructures occur increasingly in modern, low-alloy multi-phase steels. A knowledge of the type of bainitic microstructure formed as a result of the alloy composition and manufacturing process used is important in enabling the required level of strength to be achieved. The morphology of the cementite precipitated plays an important role in identifying the phases present. Currently, in order to characterise and evaluate the sub-microscopic cementite formed the lengthy and expensive process of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used.
The work presented here demonstrates that with the use of an optimised method of specimen preparation and examination, the morphology of the cementite precipitate in bainitic microstructures may also be examined using high resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and, in addition, the quantitative characteristics such as particle length, number and distribution evaluated. Compared with TEM, this optimised method of specimen preparation and examination will in future permit statistically more accurate and thus more cost efficient investigations to be carried out on the formation of cementite.
