摘要

Asthma is a complex, heterogeneous disease resulting from the effects and interactions of numerous genetic and environmental factors Numerous studies of the associations between asthma, atopy and bronchial hyper-responsiveness and candidate genes have provided evidence for the role of several pertinent genes. mainly those involved in the immune response Genome-wide screening conducted in various populations in the past 10 years has led to the identification of nine genes potentially implicated in risk for asthma and for phenotypes associated with asthma However. the function of most of these genes is still unclear and remains to be elucidated Recent advances in molecular technologies which allow genotyping of thousands of genetic polymorphisms in candidate chromosomal regions and across the genome, together with the development of statistical methods which will make it possible to analyse complex biological systems, will result in rapid progress towards the identification of new genes as well as gene-gene and gene-environment interactions Indeed. asthma susceptibility genes already identified have been found to have variable expression.
