A method was found to estimate the value of the fracture toughness K-1c in view of the passivation energy of plastic zone in the crack tip under the different states of plain stress and plain strain, while considering the effect of the stress relaxation and the strengthing of materials. An estimation formula to calculate the fracture toughness related to the convention mechanics performance was inferred after analysis of the shape of the passivation zone and the distribution of the stress state. Calculation utilizing the experimental convention mechanics performance of the LZ50 axle steel produces the value of the shape factor Z. The probability distribution of the values of experimental fracture toughness and calculated fracture toughness were compared and analysed with analysis of the influence of the factors. The investigation result show that it is appropriate to establish the relationship between the convention mechanics performance and the fracture toughness K-1c.
