Antibiofilm Activity of Nanosilver/Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Hydrogel Membranes Against Clinical Isolate of Klebsiella pneumoniae

Nanosilver has been studied as a valuable material for its strong antibacterial effects. In this work we reported the in vitro antibiofilm activities of nanosilver hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (Ag/HPMC) hydrogel membranes against Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical strain KP306 biofilms. The cell morphological changes of K. pneumoniae in the absence and presence of Ag/HPMC hydrogel have been investigated by scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Meanwhile, the inhibitory effects of Ag/HPMC hydrogel against the biofilm formation of K. pneumoniae have been further explored with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) as well as tissue culture plate (TCP) method. The results indicate that the Ag/HPMC hydrogel can effectively prevent the formation of bacterial biofilm. Compared with the nanosilver, the Ag/HPMC hydrogel demonstrates better antibiofilm effect against K. pneumoniae.
