Differential cell culture susceptibility and proliferative response to avian, human, and swine influenza viruses

Growth characteristics of different influenza viruses in various human and animal cell cultures were tested, and their influence on cell culture growth was evaluated. It was shown that pandemic influenza viruses replicated poorly in almost all cultures tested. Still, though they didn't induce cytopathic effect, the replication of the virus could be detected by de novo NP synthesis. These viruses, as well as those which replicated efficiently in cell cultures, induced apoptosis. Moreover, low doses of viruses had a stimulating effect on cell proliferation in monolayer and suspension cell cultures.
