A novel modified gelatin used as paper strength agent

摘要

A series of graft copolymers were synthesized in inverse emulsion by graft copolymerization of methylacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMC) and acrylamide (AM) onto gelatin. Using K2S2O8 and Na2SO3 as initiators, the reactions were carried out. Both the graft copolymerization reaction and the products used as strength agent in wood pulp were studied. From the experiments, an optimum condition of the graft, copolymerization was established. When the mass percent of the initiator and DMC were 1.0 and 25 based on the weight of monomers, the pH value of the system was 7-8 and the temperature of the reaction was 55 degrees C, a stable inverse emulsion which had the highest graft ratio and monomers conversion ratio could be obtained. When these graft copolymers were used as the strength agent in wood pulp, the breaking length, wet breaking length, burst index and folding endurance of the handsheets could be increased by 19.58%, 158.57%, 27.13% and 383.87% respectively, compared with the control sample. Meanwhile the combination between fibers could be seen clearly by the SEM pictures.
