An efficient synthesis of functionalised hexahydropyrimidines via the reaction of N-formyl ureas/thioureas with an acetylenic ester in the presence of an aryl phosphine

The synthesis of eight functionalised hexahydropyrimidines in good to excellent yields has been achieved via a three-component 1: 1: 1 reaction of a triarylphosphine, a dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylate and a N-formylurea or N-formylthiourea at room temperature.
