The Behavior of the Flow in Water Lubricated Bearings

The implementation of sliding bearings, such as journal and thrust bearings, into hydropower plants goes back several decades. The risk of contamination through oil leakage in the environment must be eliminated; therefore water lubricated bearings are far preferable. Water lubrication is characterized by smaller film thickness, as water%26apos;s viscosity is lower than oil%26apos;s. The smaller film thickness, the elastic deformation of the cylindrical bush and the movement of the tilting-pads are responsible for the complex flow induced, which the main topic of the current analysis. It will be given an overview of the issues involved by the flow in water lubricated bearings and how these can be resolved by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experimental investigation.
