摘要

Objective. This investigation explored the associations of parenting (Study I) and aspects of the parent-adolescent relationship (Study 2) with adolescent emotion regulation (ER) difficulties, and the potential moderating role of adolescent gender in these associations. Method. Adolescents reported on their mothers' parenting, on negative interactions, and support in their relationship to their mothers, and on ER difficulties. Results. Results show that maternal control (especially psychological control) and the quality of the mother-adolescent relationship is significantly associated with adolescent ER difficulties in expected directions. Links between behavioral control, support and negative interaction, and adolescent ER difficulties were generally stronger for females than for males. Conclusion. It may be concluded that aspects of parenting and the adolescent-mother relationship are salient in the adolescent's experience of emotion regulation difficulties. Studies on ER in social context should account for potential gender effects.
