Negative thermal expansion compound ZrW2O8 was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method with low temperature heat treatment at 500 degrees C. The XRD result showed that the crystalline precursor ZrW2O7(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) was formed when the concentration of HCl was equal to or greater than 6 mol/L. The thermal stability of the synthesized ZrW2O8 and its precursor ZrW2O7(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) were studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), which confirmed ZrW2O8 could be synthesized through sintering the precursor at low temperature of 500 degrees C. Powder X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy investigations confirmed that the synthesized product is single cubic ZrW2O8 phase.
