To guarantee the security and the stability of the photovoltaic(PV) system, the appropriate protection scheme is absolutely necessary. The three-phase PV system which is connected with the 380 V/50 Hz distribution power system is investigated, and the theoretical analysis of the various faults of the feeder or electric line is accomplished. The theoretical analysis results are confirmed by the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation, and the analysis and simulation results are consistent in showing that the current protection is not suitable for the PV system islanding operation any more. By generalizing the fault analysis results, it can be concluded that the sag of the phase voltage and the swell of the negative sequence voltage are the obvious fault characteristics of the balanced and unbalanced faults respectively. The theoretical basis is provided to study the related protection scheme.
