摘要

Using epigenetic markers for the diagnosis of malignant tumors is undoubtedly close to becoming part of the clinical practice. However, the possibilities for the use of epigenetic markers for tumor diagnosis are far from exhausted. So far all marker search strategies have largely focused on candidate genes and promoters while neglecting the rest of the genome. Moreover, the epigenetic and genetic heterogeneity of tumors were not taken into account. Worldwide alliances are currently being built to decipher the maps of tumor epigenomes using next generation sequencing technologies. This will generate comprehensive novel biological insights. Computer-supported interpretations of epigenomic data will lead to a more rational design of epigenetic tumor markers for diagnostic purposes. It will become increasingly important to combine epigenetic markers and to develop sensitive, flexible and robust assays for large cohort testing. Further interdisciplinary work is needed to firmly establish epigenetic diagnosis in the clinical routine.
