Mass infestation of Kepkatrombicula desaleri (Acari: Trombiculidae) larvae in a chamois kid from Tyrol, Austria
A massive infestation of orange-red chiggers, larvae of Kepkatrombicula desaleri, was diagnosed in a chamois kid (Rupicapra r. rupicapra) which was harvested in bad physical condition in December 2009 in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol, Austria. The chiggers were predominately infesting the head accumulating in the areas around the mouth and eyes, and in the pinnae; however, gross skin lesions were not observed. The poor condition of the kid, however, was caused by the heavy helminth burden of the gastrointestinal tract and the protostrongylid lungworm infection.
