摘要

Students often drink alcohol at their highest levels in college. It is suggested that students with the most severe drinking problems begin drinking by or in high school, but studies on high school drinking tend to focus on students who have academic problems and are not college-bound. The purpose of this study was to examine high school drinking behaviors that were risk indicators for problematic student drinking in college, and to use these to identify high school-to-college drinking trajectories. Using an electronic survey, data were obtained on 430 first- and second-year male and female college students mandated to a harm-reduction program due to violation of college alcohol-use policies. Data on alcohol use were obtained through a modified version of the Daily Drinking Questionnaire in which students were asked to describe their drinking during high school and college. Students were also asked to report the frequency with which they drank to intoxication and whether or not they had experienced blackouts as a result of drinking. Age of first use, and number of drinks per day, drinks per week, and drinking days per week, all during the last month in high school, were used to create High School Risk (HSR) groups: low, moderate, and high. HSR groups differed on amount of drinking and the likelihood of drinking to blackout in college. The importance of screening and intervening with high-risk, college-bound students is discussed.
